Edward F. Obert Award 2022

Βραβείο Edward F. Obert Award 2022

Edward F. Obert Award 2022, presented at the International Mechanical Engineering Congress and awarded at the following ASME Congress (November 2022).

Long-term research conducted by the Laboratory of Applied Thermodynamics, Cooling Technology and Refrigerated Vehicles,  in the field of cryogenics and superfluidity resulted in a publication entitled: “Studying the Superfluid Transformation in Helium 4 Through the Partition Function and Entropic Behavior”, which was submitted at the International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exhibition 2021 (IMECE 2021) by authors Mr. Georgios-Raphael Domenikos, Prof. Emmanuel Rogdakis and Prof. Irene Koronakis.

The research paper incorporates the main object of study in Mr. Georgios-Raphael Domenikos’ doctoral dissertation and concerns a thermodynamic and innovative approach and interpretation of the superfluidity phenomenon by relating it to the BoseEinstein condensation phenomenon and connecting the macroscopic and microscopic behavior of 4He at temperatures close to absolute zero. The publication received the Edward F. Obert Award by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) as an outstanding publication in the field of thermodynamics and the award was presented to the authors in November 2022 at the International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exhibition 2022 in Ohio, USA.

This distinction is of particular importance as it concerns a significant contribution to the field of basic research in superfluidity. In addition, this was the first time that the Edward F. Obert Award was presented to a Greek university research group.
