2nd place for NTUA’s Mechanical & Architectural Engineering team in the ASHRAE international student competition (2021 ASHRAE Student Design Competition)

The second prize was awarded to the Mechanical & Architectural Engineering team of NTUA’s ASHRAE Student Branch for their participation in the Integrated Sustainable Building Design category of the annual international student competition organized for 2021 by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (2021 ASHRAE Student Design Competition). As part of the competition, relevant studies from hundreds of academic institutions around the world were submitted and evaluated.

The team who prepared the award-winning study consists of Mechanical Engineering students George Orfanos, Andreas Antzoulatos, Dimitris Dimitropoulos and George Papachristos and School of Architecture students Panagiotis Karapiperis, Metaxia Piliouras, Athanasios Petsinis and Spyridon Tsamadias. Academic supervision was provided by Assoc. Professor Irene Koronaki of the School of Mechanical Engineering within the “Industrial Refrigeration Systems” course and Asst. Professor Miltiadis Katsaros of the School of Architecture, while the team also received technical guidance by Petros Dalavouras, PhD Candidate of the School of Mechanical Engineering and Ioannis Timagenis, external collaborator of the Sound Studio of the School of Architecture.

The subject of the competition was the integrated sustainable design of a new 4645 m2 two-story building on a higher education campus in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada. The building houses a dining area which can accommodate 720 people, office space and industrial refrigeration facilities. The team had to adopt the sustainability premise throughout the building life cycle, following the standards and regulations of ASHRAE and LEED as well as consider an alternative design scenario tailored to the characteristics of the building and the wider area. Heat recovery from kitchens, space remodeling, and maximizing natural light are some of the elements through which low energy consumption and competitive investment costs were achieved over 50 years. Finally, Industry 4.0 elements were integrated in the building to enhance its sustainability by means of new technological applications, such as the automatic recording system and food waste management.
