Victory of the team of Mechanical and Architectural Engineering students in the annual 2024 ASHRAE Student Design Competition

We are thrilled to announce the victory of the team of Mechanical and Architectural Engineering students in the annual 2024 ASHRAE Student Design Competition, organized by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). This year’s competition challenged participants to design an innovative library building that not only serves as a community center promoting education and social engagement but also operates with zero energy and the smallest possible environmental footprint.

The team from the National Technical University of Athens, consisting of Mechanical Engineers and Architects, proved their merit with a multidimensional design that meets ASHRAE’s international standards and the project’s specifications. They developed a building noted for its energy efficiency and environmental performance, designed to ensure the health and comfort of its occupants for at least 50 years.

The supervision of the Mechanical Engineers’ team from NTUA was handled by Prof. Irene Koronaki, in collaboration with Mr. P. Dalavouras and Mr. G. Orfanos, and the team of Architectural Engineers was supervised by Prof. Eleni Alexandrou with Ms. Th. Papadopoulou.

During the competition, energy and environmental studies submitted by academic institutions worldwide were evaluated. The third-place global win by the NTUA team reflects the serious and thorough work conducted within the courses of the Schools (Industrial Refrigeration Systems of the 9th semester of the School of Mechanical Engineers NTUA) in collaboration with Greek and international experts starting each October and concluding the following May with the submission of the project-study and video.

This victory is a testament to the cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration promoted by the National Technical University of Athens, as well as the dedication of its students and professors to excellence and innovation. Their success in this competition confirms their ability to meet challenges and advance sustainable development through sustainable energy design.
